Wolfpack corner commits to WVU
South Fort Myers football player Brodrick Jenkins had a nagging thought as his official visit to West Virginia University drew to a close – he didn’t want to leave.
“When you get that feeling – that you don’t want to get on the plane and go home – that’s when I knew,” said Jenkins, who verbally committed to the Mountaineers on Tuesday. “Everything about it made me feel comfortable.”
The mid-December trip also included Jenkins’ first experience with frozen precipitation.
“It was the first time I ever saw snow,” he said. “It wasn’t that bad to me.”
The 5-foot-10, 177-pound Jenkins, who played defensive back and wide receiver for the Wolfpack, will be the third Southwest Florida high schooler to join West Virginia in three years. Former North Fort Myers running back Noel Devine committed in 2006 and Golden Gate wide receiver J.D. Woods signed in 2007.
Jenkins said he also considered Pittsburgh and Wisconsin before choosing the Mountaineers.
“(The decision) relieved so much stress,” he said. “It’s like a ton of bricks have been put off my shoulders.”
Jenkins had 22 tackles and three interceptions for South Fort Myers last season. As a wide receiver, he caught 22 passes for 483 yards and three touchdowns. Jenkins also led South with 867 all-purpose yards.
Jenkins said West Virginia is projecting him as a cornerback.
