WVU losing money on bowls
MORGANTOWN — When the financials came down from accounting on West Virginia University’s trip to the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, there were smiles all around the athletic department. The school had lost only $13,000. Let us repeat that. Going to the Meineke Car Care Bowl cost WVU only $13,000. See, if they had [...]
Still one more hill to climb
MORGANTOWN – Mike Joseph will spend the next two months trying his best to get West Virginia’s football team in shape without crossing a couple of very difficult lines. First, the school’s strength and conditioning coordinator can’t afford to work the Mountaineers too little or too much. There’s a fine line that separates underachieving and [...]
The Road to Success
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Jim Carlen was never one to mince words. Ask him to give his opinion about a certain subject and you are likely to the unvarnished truth. Carlen, a guest earlier this week on Metro News’ Statewide Sportsline, will be in Morgantown this weekend as part of a Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ fundraiser [...]
Jennings finds WVU at end of long road
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A week from today, Danny Jennings will arrive at West Virginia University. He is, as he says with emphasis, “pumped” to begin a college basketball career he believes will be beyond anything he could accurately predict. “I’m ready for anything,” he said from his home in New York City, “and everything.” What [...]
Gyorko named Louisville Slugger All-American
MORGANTOWN – West Virginia University shortstop Jedd Gyorko has been named a Louisville Slugger All-America second-team selection, announced Thursday by Collegiate Baseball. The Morgantown native batted .421 with eight home runs, 28 doubles, 58 RBI, 74 runs and 96 hits.
White’s Wildcat coming to pass
On Thursday, out of pads, in an otherwise uneventful practice, quarterback Pat White lined up as the lone back in the Wildcat formation – the WildPat, if you will. A couple of weeks ago, in a previous practice open to the media, White lined up as receiver for one play. No one stopped practice either [...]
Huggins: Ebanks will be a first-round pick
It was, on the surface, a rather ridiculous brief that crossed my desk in early April. “WVU freshman Devan Ebanks will not enter the NBA Draft.” Well, duh! I thought I laughed at it. Turns out nobody laughed harder than West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins. “It wasn’t even an issue,” Huggins said Thursday at [...]
Huggs, Stew laud walk-on program
Bill Stewart was a walk-on at Fairmont State who earned a scholarship through hard work and determination. At Cincinnati, Bob Huggins had a walk-on, Steve Sanders, who one season led the Metro Conference in 3-point shooting. Is it any wonder the West Virginia University football and basketball coaches have an admiration, if not a soft [...]
Johnson Verbally Commits To WVU
Senior-to-be Jeremy Johnson has verbally committed to West Virginia to play football. Johnson, 6-foot-2 182-pound quarterback, is from Silsbee High School in Texas. In 2008 Johnson threw for 1,080 yards and rushed for 932 yards with 20 touchdown passes and five interceptions. Other schools that recruited Johnson include Michigan, Oregon, Oklahoma, Baylor, Illinois, TCU, Texas, [...]
Perception of WVU far from truth
MORGANTOWN – A few days back Matt Hayes, who is a college football analyst for The Sporting News, did an article listing four teams on the rise in college football and four teams in decline. The West Virginia University Mountaineers were listed in Column B. This is what Hayes wrote: “WVU had a BCS-ready team [...]
