Big East bowl picture: It is what it is
MORGANTOWN – Are you like me? Do you hate that? Does it conjure up nightmarish flashes of Dennis Green incoherently screaming, “They are who we thought they were!” It is what it is. I suppose you could say, “Get used to it,” or “Live with it.” And like death and taxes there’s nothing you – [...]

West Virginia University has announced the 2009-10 men’s basketball non-conference schedule, including two games — The Citadel on Nov. 24 and Marshall on Jan. 20 — in Charleston. The Mountaineers will play 12 non-conference contests, including home games against Ohio State, Ole Miss, Duquesne, Coppin State and Loyola College. According to the school, West Virginia [...]
Smith fitting in to new surroundings
MORGANTOWN – Ask any of West Virginia’s freshmen – or at least those from anywhere other than perhaps West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland – about adjusting to life in Morgantown and the responses are varied. “Wow,” said tailback Daquan Hargrett, fresh out of Miami and still amazed at the hills. And that’s in August, [...]
Josh Taylor impresses Mountaineer coaches for a backup job
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Josh Taylor played in only one game in two seasons in West Virginia’s football program, but he may have mastered something many Mountaineers at his position don’t. Taylor is a redshirt sophomore tutored daily by veteran defensive line coach Bill Kirelawich, known for his salty-tongued, barking style as he coaches his charges. [...]
Sanders might be at Mountaineer practice after all
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – When West Virginia University’s football camp opens Friday, suspended slot receiver/running back Jock Sanders may be in attendance. In a motions hearing Friday in Monongalia County Magistrate Court, Sanders’ attorney, Harley Wagner, said Sanders has been reinstated to the team after nearly six months of indefinite suspension for a DUI arrest in [...]
WVU coaches praise rebuilt offense
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia exited the two-week camp portion of preseason football practice in a rather unusual situation. The Mountaineers, who have to replace so much experience and production on offense, feel pretty good about where they stand on that side of the ball. “It’s not even close in terms of what the coaches [...]

Don’t mess with the swimmer.”No [...]
WVU tight end Urban seeking increased role
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Tyler Urban took a chance by committing to West Virginia out of high school. When Urban, a former Norwin High School fullback, signed to play tight end at WVU a year ago, all he had was a promise from new offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen that a tight end would be utilized in [...]
WVU?tough, but still rough around edges
MORGANTOWN — West Virginia University doesn’t play a football game for two weeks, and it’s a good thing because they will need every second of those two weeks to put themselves in position to beat anyone, let alone a Liberty team that went 10-2 a year ago with victories over a pair of Division I-AA [...]
Mountaineers turn focus to correcting mental mistakes
MORGANTOWN – Bill Stewart tried to put the best face possible on West Virginia’s final scrimmage of the Mountaineers’ two-week preseason camp, but even for the eternal optimist it was difficult. Ten penalties, two interceptions, kicking blunders and even problems getting the clock set right made Saturday afternoon’s workout something less than a smooth operation. [...]
