Syracuse hopes to satisfy seven-year itch against West Virginia
Syracuse, NY — One of the more unique pieces housed in the various trophy cases inside the Syracuse University football Hall of Fame area is a sizeable plank from a goal post that stood – and fell – at West Virginia University’s old Mountaineer Field in Morgantown.
The whitewashed wooden prize dates to 1955 when the Orangemen of head coach Ben Schwartzwalder defeated the Mountaineers 20-13. Schwartzwalder, who played center at West Virginia under Greasey Neal, had beaten his beloved alma mater Four years later, Schwartzwalder would lead the Orange to its only national championship.
Thus, one of longest and most important series for Syracuse began.
Underneath the goal post inside the trophy case, dust collects on an empty space. Since 1993, the winner of the Syracuse-West Virginia game has received the Schwartzwalder Trophy. The last time the trophy took up residence at Syracuse was 2001.
