Upset of 1993 Miami team one of WVU’s best

MORGANTOWN – No. 9 West Virginia’s upset of No. 4 Miami for the 10th victory of the Mountaineers’ 11-0 regular season in 1993 ranks among the school’s greatest victories.

An overflow crowd of 70,222 – still the largest for a game in West Virginia – and a national television audience saw the thrilling 17-14 triumph at Mountaineer Field on a clear, cold 38-degree Nov. 20 night.

That and a 21-20 upset of No. 4 Boston College on Oct. 20, 1984 at home were the two victories over the highest-ranked teams beaten in College Football Hall of Fame Coach Don Nehlen’s record 21 years as WVU boss.
