WVU students only hurting themselves

By Mitch Vingle

I CONSIDERED not writing this column. See, at one time, I was one of those obnoxious college students. I went to West Virginia University.

And, yes, I screamed profanities at the opposing sports teams. How could I tackle this subject without being hypocritical?

Then it hit me.

The reason I can tackle this issue is because I was one of those students. Because I care about the college students in this state. Because I was one. And because I hope my daughter becomes one.

I’m not going to comment on how stupid throwing various items onto WVU’s Coliseum court was on Wednesday night during the Pitt game.

Sports fans and commentators across the nation took care of that on Thursday. Instead of focusing on the Mountaineers’ impressive win against the Panthers, ESPN concentrated on the trashed court. The network showed Pitt’s assistant coach getting hit by a coin. Scott Van Pelt closed his ESPN radio show calling out West Virginia fans.

So I won’t go there. When the buzz wore off, when the hangover cleared, those who threw the items had to realize it was dumb.

What no one explained to me back in the day, though, was why insipid cheers and trash throwing and other tasteless acts are more than thickheaded.

It’s not because the acts embarrass the university. Even though they do.

It’s not because the acts embarrass the state. Even though they do.
