WVU is going to stick to game plan
MORGANTOWN — Sometimes, crunching the numbers in sports is a losing proposition.
Take last year’s WVU-Colorado game, won by the Buffaloes 17-14 in overtime.
The Mountaineers rushed for 311 yards (Patrick White for 148 and Noel Devine 133) and they still lost the game.
Colorado struck fast, quarterback Cody Hawkins throwing for two first-quarter touchdowns while White completed [...]
Colorado looking forward to visiting WVU
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Colorado has lost seven consecutive road games and 13 of 15 played in Coach Dan Hawkins’ four seasons.
West Virginia, which hosts the Buffaloes in Thursday’s 7:30 p.m. ESPN game, has won 15 of 17 home night games since 2000. The losses were against Pittsburgh in 2007 and Cincinnati last season.
The Mountaineers are [...]
Colorado’s visit to WVU not a geographic issue …
MORGANTOWN – When West Virginia played at Colorado a year ago, one of the hottest topics of conversation prior to the game was geography.
No one is saying anything about it this year, though, and with good reason.
When the Mountaineers traveled to Boulder, they went across two time zones and up into the high altitude and [...]
WVU fairly healthy after off week
MORGANTOWN — West Virginia Coach Bill Stewart pledged Monday linebacker Reed Williams and quarterback Jarrett Brown will play in Thursday’s 7:30 p.m. ESPN game from Mountaineer Field, but said he isn’t sure defensive tackle Scooter Berry will go against the Buffaloes.
Berry (shoulder sprain) and Williams (foot sprain) both missed the Auburn game after being injured [...]
Football is a tricky game
A few thoughts:
* I spoke at a businessmen’s luncheon recently. They wanted an opinion on the 2009 Mountaineers. I bluffed my way through, because I’m out of the loop. I don’t know any more about them than you do.
I did tell them I thought if WVU’s offensive line jells and quarterback Jarrett Brown is as [...]
Devine not talking about role in WVU offense
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – There probably shouldn’t have been any doubt about it. Noel Devine seemed a tad upset some might have existed.
West Virginia’s junior running back, who by and large picked the times he’s spoken to the media and has never said anything close to controversial, simply will not discuss his role in the offense.
Won’t [...]
Starks shining at receiver spot
MORGANTOWN — A year ago at this time, he was a concept more than a player, this talented athlete named Bradley Starks.
He was part quarterback, part wide receiver, the man who could do anything and yet, at the time, was not ready to do anything.
The West Virginia coaching staff knew they had a special player [...]
Horror movie review
MORGANTOWN – Jarrett Brown admits that while he’s no masochist, he still couldn’t help but subject himself to watching West Virginia’s game at Auburn over and over and over again.
By the Mountaineer quarterback’s own account, he probably watched the thing five times in two days. The outcome never changed and neither did his performance.
Yes, there [...]
Pay His Dues
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The last thing in the world Josh Taylor wanted to do was wait around any longer than he had to.
Sophomore Josh Taylor recorded his first career sack in a starting role at Auburn.
Taylor, a sophomore defensive tackle from Miramar, Fla., was about to make his first college start in Jordan-Hare Stadium against [...]
Clarke stays true to legacy of the fullback
MORGANTOWN — Fullback.
Say it softly to yourself and see what kind of images it brings up.
Tough guy. Broad shoulders. Helmet covered with paint scraped from hard hats worn by opponents.
Jim Brown. Jim Taylor.
And if your name isn’t Jim you carry a name like Bronko or Mr. Inside.
Or maybe you just think of Owen Schmitt.
Fullback.
Say it [...]
