“We have to play 40 minutes,”
By Bob Hertzel
MORGANTOWN — No one possibly can know if West Virginia University’s No. 9-ranked men’s basketball team will win tonight in its game at South Florida because no one can possibly know how the team will react to the tough loss it suffered on the road at Notre Dame.
See, life on the road in [...]
WVU?must get offense back on track
MORGANTOWN — There is no one on this green earth — OK, white earth — who was surprised that West Virginia lost at Notre Dame on Saturday night.
That was as sure as freezing temperatures tonight and snow tomorrow.
Happens every time they go there, 10 straight now.
So that the Mountaineers lost was not disturbing.
How they lost [...]
USF coach Leavitt fired amid allegations he hit a player
South Florida football coach Jim Leavitt has been fired following an investigation of an allegation that he struck one of his players in the locker room.
Leavitt confirmed his dismissal, telling The Associated Press he was “disappointed” and the allegation was “absolutely false.”
USF would not confirm Leavitt’s dismissal, but university spokeswoman Lara Wade said all questions [...]
Pat White Released From Hospital
Former WVU quarterback Pat White was treated and released from a Miami hospital after being knocked unconscious during the Dolphins game with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
White, the Dolphin’s back-up quarterback, was running down the sideline when he took a helmet-to-helmet hit from Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor.
White crumbled to the turf out of bounds on the Steelers sideline. Steelers [...]
An eye-opener for WVU
CLEVELAND – This was not what West Virginia expected in its trip to face a rather non-descript Cleveland State team. In retrospect, though, it was exactly what the Mountaineers needed.
Largely unchallenged throughout most of a 7-0 start this season, No. 6 West Virginia was taken to the limit by the Vikings, who nearly pressed the [...]
WVU hoops team survives Cleveland State’s upset bid
CLEVELAND — Da’Sean Butler’s layup with 1.2 seconds left, after West Virginia finally handled a suffocating press, gave No. 6 West Virginia an 80-78 win over Cleveland State on Saturday.
Kevin Jones scored a career-high 23 and Butler added 18 and nine rebounds for the Mountaineers (8-0), who did just enough against a bothersome 2-3 zone [...]

Huggins’ team battling long-range woes
MORGANTOWN – The way Bob Huggins figures it, he took about 19 hours of classes for every semester he played basketball and studied at West Virginia.
“I was bored,” said the Mountaineers coach who was a two-time Academic All-American and graduated magna cum laude a year before he earned his master’s degree. “And I had a [...]
Crusing to win
MORGANTOWN — There are days when West Virginia turns the ball over a lot. It drives Bob Huggins crazy, but he can live with it.
There are days when they miss a lot of shots. That drives Huggins crazy, too, but he can live with that.
Even turnovers don’t send him off onto a tirade.
But play bad [...]
